Music was a huge part of my life this year, especially going to see live shows. I managed to see over 60 different bands on stage in 2012, which has to be a personal record for me. There were too many great performances to name them all, but some highlights for me: getting to see Of Monsters and Men, Blitzen Trapper, & Polica up front in tiny venues at SXSW. M.Ward in a church in Austin. Alabama Shakes at the Moody Theater. Pillow Fight (Dan The Automator/Emily Wells/Kid Koala) with 20 people in a bar. M83 and The XX both in Seattle’s gorgeous Paramount Theater. Passion Pit, The Lumineers, & Metric at Key Arena. And wrapping it up with a high energy Macklemore & Ryan Lewis show in San Francisco.

Needless to say, a number of these artists made it into my list of Top 50 Songs of 2012, but since I’ve been primarily highlighting alt/indie tracks, I didn’t include some of my other favorites in other genres. In particular, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, and The Heist by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are a couple of my favorite albums you should check out. To add some variety I limited each artist to one track which made it a little more difficult to assemble this list, but I loved pulling it all together. If you haven’t been listening to new music in 2012, I encourage you to give the whole list a listen.
