Dnak 91 (July 2016)

I just watched 3 full days of live music in Seattle at the Capitol Hill Block Party. And certainly, I enjoyed seeing the more well known acts (Chvrches, The Joy Formidable, Washed Out) and breakout local acts (ODESZA, Car Seat Headrest) put on great performances. But I also loved seeing a number of small acts play some awesome sets, like Oh Pep!, Tangerine, Benajamin Francis Leftwich, and Iska Dhaaf. Checkout some pics I took below. I included songs from some of those bands in my list this month amidst a number of tracks from some familiar groups, like Jagwar Ma, Blind Pilot, Bat for Lashes, Blood Orange, Angel Olsen, and more. And I’m opening the list with some fantastic songs from Justice and The Avalanches. Enjoy.

Dnak 90 (June 2016)

It’s officially summer, and that means music festivals and more excuses to go listen to live music. And speaking of live music, I got to see a great show at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore by Maya Folick, Young Magic, and Yeasayer a few weeks back. This month’s playlist is an eclectic mix of indie rock, folk, and electronica. I’m loving the tracks by Maggie Robers, Pinegrove, and Big Thief. And I continue to recommend the whole album by Mitski.

Dnak 89 (May 2016)

Sudden releases of new albums with little or no advance warning have certainly become more common, and not just from the Beyonces of this world. Radiohead’s new album is stunning. And we have a bunch of new singles from some of my favorite artists, including Glass Animals, CHVRCHES, and Band of Horses. Check it out. To close the playlist, I have a new track from Miski, one of the most raw and surprising artists I saw at SXSW this year.

One of the lucky benefits of being in the Bay Area is that so many bands that play at Coachella find their way up here in the few days between their separate performances down south. Just at the Fox Theater in Oakland, you have M83, Chvrches, and Grimes playing on consecutive nights! I was fortunate enough to see M83 (one of my favorites) again, and I’ve included a track from them in my new list. But checkout the stunning “I&I” from Lost Under Heaven (LUH). Other highlights are the collaboration between Neko Case, K.D. Lang, and Laura Veirs; new music from Parquet Courts and Frightened Rabbit, and a track from UK shoegazers SULK. Enjoy.

I love @m83.official

SXSW 2016 was another incredible week of live music spanning across the heart of Austin. I’m always blown away by how different it is from any other music festival, providing both intimate moments with undiscovered artists and incredible performances by emerging acts. I managed to see 55 shows over 5 days and nights, and I’ve packed this playlist almost exclusively with artists that performed in Austin that week. Some of the more spectacular performances I saw were from Bloc Party, Miike Snow, Iggy Pop, Jamie XX, and Lucius. But I also loved raw performances from Car Seat Headrest, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, and Mitski, and the smooth electro sounds from Baio, Polica, and HAELOS. I’ve included a few snaps from the shows I saw below.

Dnak 86 (February 2016)

It’s my first new playlist for 2016, and there’s a ton of new music to check out, including new tracks from Yeasayer, Nada Surf, Savages, M. Ward, and even The Lumineers. Definitely check out the track from Gryffin, which might be my favorite on the list. I’ll be heading to SXSW Music again this year, so be sure to hit me up if you’re going to be in Austin. Would love to see some shows with you.
