Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma opened my eyes to the massive changes we have made to our own food supply with possibly detrimental consequences. How did we manage to engineer the ruminant cow, a miracle of nature that can convert grass into protein, into an accessory to our growing dependence on petroleum and subsidized corn? And the descriptions “100% natural grain-finished beef”, “organic chicken”, “eggs from organic hens” have much different meanings to me now.
I don’t think I will ever look at food the same way again.
I encourage you to buy and read this book.

It was Beyond Beef and a few other bits in similar vein that got me off the industrial stuff! I’ve heard good things about Pollan’s book, too. And I don’t eat very much corn.
