KNAK 15

This year is just flying by.  October already?    It’s not even the end of day light savings time, and it’s already dark when I’m stuck in traffic driving home on 101.  At least I have my tunes to listen to.   I enjoyed putting this list together, so I hope you find a few tracks you can get into.

You can download the iTunes iMix or the Yahoo! Music playlist.  A record this month for Yahoo! Music coverage (16 out of 17 tracks).   As always, I love hearing your comments and suggestions so please send ‘em my way.

Sparklehorse Don’t Take My Sunshine Away
With the arrival of the first rain here in the Bay Area, it only seems appropriate to start off the list this week with this beautiful track from Sparklehorse’s first album in 5 years.

Teddybears Different Sound
Funky sounds from this Swedish group.  Electronica notes and distorted vocals layered on top of a rock/punk track.  I like it.

The Hidden Cameras Awoo
This Toronto indie outfit managed to create a song that features the refrain “Awoo” for a full 100 seconds of the 166 second song, and it somehow works!

The Rapture The Devil (only on iTunes)
A high energy track from this self-described genre bending Disco Punk  band out of New York City.

The Decemberists O Valencia
Portland indie super group just released their new album “The Crane Wife” this week to rave reviews.  Here’s a great up-tempo indie pop number.

Scissor Sisters She’s My Man
Flamboyant singer Jake Shears keeps bringing the falsetto on their new album, which keeps their signature dance/rock/pop sound.

Yo La Tengo The Weakest Part
Veteran indie rock band puts out another strong album, and here’s a pretty  syncopated pop track I liked.

Beck Dark Star
With his new album “The Information” this week, and after seeing Beck on Friday night, I had to include one of his tracks.   Dark Star takes some of the sounds from “Sea Change” and overlays it with the slow-rap prevalent on the new album.

Ben Kweller Sundress
A catchy sunshine-filled song for your playlist from this Texan singer-songwriter.

M. Ward Chinese Translation
Another strong folk-rock  track  from M.Ward.  This one is worth checking out  for the intricate guitar work

The Twin Atlas Roll On
A gentle mellow track from this Atmospheric folk/pop duo out of Philadelphia & NYC.

The Mountain Goats Woke Up New
Lead singer John Darnielle’s whispered falsetto and acoustic guitar shine through.

The Dears Hate Then Love
It look like it’s a  purposeful switch to a lower-fi sound on their just-released album Gang of Losers for this Montreal band.  Definitely a change from No Cities Left

Jim Noir Climb a Tree
One of the more lower-key songs on his debut LP, Jim Noir’s innocent sound still comes through.

The Little Ones Face the Facts
The Little Ones’  EP Sing Song was just re-released by Astralwerks (their new label) with a brand new track “Face the Facts”.   And while you’re at it, download “Lovers Who Uncover” from KNAK 11 if you haven’t already.

The Pernice Brothers High As Kite
Here’s a really beautiful song from The Pernice Brothers, a New England indie pop/rock band. Clean vocals over heavy piano and light guitars.

The Changes On a String
I’ve never heard of this Chicago band before, but that’s what’s so great about online music…. you can discover new music every day.    So I’ll end this autumn playlist with the ringing bells that carry this track from beginning to end.

That’s it!  Hope you enjoy.
