Here’s my first list of the year. There are a few new tracks, but many of these are from 2005 releases that I either have discovered late or have grown on me over time. Hope you enjoy ‘em. And please keep sending me suggestions. As always, you can download the yahoo music engine playlist (songs marked with a “y”) or the iTunes iMix (marked with an “i”).
Gotta Have You – The Weepies (i): Check out this indie-folk track this Boston/NYC duo’s latest album, just released online
For Real – Okkervil River (y,i): A strong track from a band based out of Austin, TX that layers a sometimes lonely vocal on dissonant sounds.
Piano Song – Summer Lawns (y,i): This is just a pretty song I heard on kexp.org. Summer Lawns is a Brooklyn indie band that emphasizes a spare vocal with an atmospheric sound.
Galang – M.I.A. (y,i): I’m a little late to the game on this one, just adding it to my playlist. I’m not sure how to classify this group…. maybe dancehall meets world music.
Gideon – My Morning Jacket (y,i): Just getting into this album. from this kentucky band known for an alt-country feel but has expanded into newer territory here.
Glass Souls – Benzos (y,i): A NYC band with an atmospheric guitar backing the vocals.
Just Because – Foxymorons (i): Just great indie pop wtih a little Nashville bent.
Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (y,i): Is this guy channeling David Byrne? I like it.
Munich – Editors (i): This UK band has gotten a lot of buzz, and while folks here wait for their album to drop, they can sample this single.
Leaders of the Free World – Elbow (y,i,): Another richly layered track from this band from Manchester.
The Green Green Grass – The American Analog Set (i): Another Texas indie band with soft guitar and mellow tracks.
Truckstop Cassettes – Portastatic (i): Here’s another track from this really great indie pop album.
Cash Machine – Hard- Fi (y,i,): Heh. Another UK band pumping out retro 80′s-sounding music. I’m sure I’ll tire of it at some point, but I haven’t yet.
You Won’t Believe It – The Rogers Sisters (y,i): Fun music out of the Brooklyn indie scene.
Wheels, No Engines – Awesome New Republic (i): An indie band out of Miami… I read about this poorly named group on pitchfork.
